Touring Healing School and Wellness Center supports survivors of rape in Indian Country during US tour
Baltimore, MD The Dream Reiki Project is a traveling Reiki school and wellness center, launched in January 2015. Shameeka Dream, Founder and Reiki Master Teacher is traveling the United States, teaching Reiki along the way. Her goal is to train 200 new students this year. She is stopping in Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Florida, California, New Jersey, and Maryland on a journey that began almost one year year ago.
Dream is joining the Monument Quilt again on the road to join Gathering of Voices: Addressing Sexual Assault in Indian Country, an event on the state capitol in Oklahoma City. As Hannah Brancato, Co-Founder of the Monument Quilt, says,“The Dream Reiki Project helps survivors, activists, organizers, and volunteers through their own healing process and their capacity as healers.”
The Monument Quilt is a bright, red, hand-sewn story of survival. Each 4-square-foot piece is created by a survivor of sexual assault. 400 such stories will be displayed on the East Lawn of the Oklahoma State Capitol building onThursday, April 2.
The Dream Reiki Project has been supporting the Monument Quilt since its inception. So far, the Dream Reiki Project has provided approximately 100 hours of Reiki and support service to visitors, volunteers, and organizers of the Monument Quilt. The school, which tours with the Monument Quilt and separately, has trained the first 5 of 200 students to be attuned in 2015. After the Oklahoma City event, the project will visit other states throughout the US.
As the Monument Quilt creates physical space that provides public recognition to survivors and reconnects them with their community and its members, the Dream Reiki Project connects survivors and other participants with the esoteric aspect of healing through Reiki, prayer, meditation, simple hand holding or hugs. While the quilt is changing forever how the US responds to rape, the Dream Reiki Project works to change how members of the community relate to themselves as part of the healing process. Shameeka Dream hopes to instill in all members of the community that they have the capacity to be healers.
